Propane Safety Starts With Knowing What To Do

Review these steps with everyone in your home or business before an emergency occurs.

If You Smell Gas or Suspect a Leak

No flames or sparks. Extinguish smoking materials and open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, outlets, landline phones, or cell phones in the affected area.
Leave immediately. Get everyone out of the building or area.
Shut off the gas only if safe. If the suspected leak is not at the tank, turn the main tank valve clockwise.
Report the leak from a safe location. Call Lower State Gas at 803-793-3558. If you cannot reach us, call 911 or the fire department.
Stay away. Do not return until a propane professional or emergency responder says it is safe.
Have the system checked. Do not use propane appliances again until a qualified professional confirms the system is leak-free.

Install and maintain propane gas, carbon monoxide, and smoke detectors according to manufacturer instructions.

Never install, modify, or repair propane systems or appliances yourself.

Keep appliance vents, tanks, regulators, piping, and meters clear of debris, snow, and ice.
